âFire and salt, Maeve,â Chall said, âare you sure? About this dance, I mean? If you ask me, it looks more like the mayorâs got a small army gathering.â
Maeve glanced back at the mage. They were crouched in an alleyway across the street from the mayorâs mansion, counting on the shadows that lengthened as night approached to hide them from view. The mage looked worried, as well he might have. Certainly Maeve felt enough worry for the both of them. Dozens of guards patrolled the area around the home and still others were stationed at the gate. âAn awful lot of guards for the mayor of a small town,â she agreed.
âRight,â Chall said. âAnd they donât exactly look like the type that take kindly to intruders. Are you sure, I mean, about Matt and Priest being here?â
Maeve sighed. âWeâve been through this, Chall. No, Iâm not sure, but it makes sense. After all, we know Cutter is inside. Besides, where else would they be? And if they are inside, we have to rescue them.â
âSure,â Chall said slowly. âItâs not that I disagree with the goal, Maeve, so much as I donât understand how we might achieve it. At least, not while keeping all of our pieces in their proper places.â
Maeve opened her mouth to respond but then started as a great roar came from nearby. She tensed, looking around and expecting to find an army charging down the street. None appeared, though, and after a moment she realized that the sound had not come from the street at all but from somewhere inside the mayorâs home. And it was not a battle cryâas she first thought. Instead, as the sound came once again, she realized that it was, in fact, cheering.
âWhat in the name of the gods is that?â Chall breathed, clearly as unnerved as she felt.
Maeve shook her head slowly, uncertainly. âI donât know, but I donât like it.â
Chall sighed. âI feel the same way. So we just have to somehow sneak past a small army of guards, into a home no doubt filled with plenty more, rescue Cutter and the restâassuming theyâre even thereâfrom what is sounding an awful lot like a mob working itself up to murder, all while trying to keep from getting ourselves killed in the process.â
Maeve gave him a tight smile. âSeems so.â
âWell,â he said, sighing again, âit ought to be interesting anyway. So, whatâs the plan?â
âHow about we start with trying not to get dead, eh?â
âItâs not that I disagree with the goal, Mae,â he said, echoing his words from earlier, âitâs the execution of it that Iâve got questions about.â
Maeve nodded slowly. âIâve got some thoughts about that. The entire town of Two Rivers seems terrified of the Fey, right?â
Chall grunted. âBased on the Fey Iâve met, I canât say that I blame them.â
âAnyway,â Maeve went on, âitâs likely that the guards share the same fear. Sure, they wouldnât be worried about an old woman and a fat manââ
âRude,â Chall interrupted.
âBut an army of the Fey, on the other handâ¦â She met his eyes, raising an eyebrow.
